2 Kings 20:12-21
When Hezekiah’s health dissolved, he dissolved in tears. He faced death and Jerusalem’s destruction. In answer to his fervent prayers, Isaiah brought God’s clear message: “I will deliver you and this city . . . for my sake and for the sake of my servant David” (2 Kings 20:6b). Hezekiah praised the Lord for that comforting word, but he forgot the foundation of his answered prayers–God’s promises.
God promised to establish David’s throne forever (2 Samuel 7:16). Hezekiah’s righteous deeds didn’t merit God’s answer to his prayers, but God’s faithfulness to His Word ensured victory. Sadly, Hezekiah didn’t recognize this truth. After his recovery, he entertained royal visitors from Babylon, giving them a tour of all his treasures (2 Kings 20:15). His pride nullified wisdom, as he foolishly did not guard the precious things of God.
God’s grace may delay judgment, but we can rest secure in His righteous justice and loving faithfulness found in Christ Jesus our Lord!
