God Bless Our Grandchildren

Genesis 48:1-20
Most of us have been involved, at least once, in one of those “multi-generation” photo opportunities. In essence, that’s what we’re seeing in Genesis 48. In verse 12 it says, “Joseph removed them [his sons] from Israel’s knees.” That makes me think that they were young. Joseph stood nearby while the photographer snapped the picture. Then, before they left, Israel [Jacob] wanted to bless his offspring. When he blessed Joseph, he did so in such a way that it also included his grandsons. As readers, we are given a glimpse into a very intimate moment involving three generations.
When I see the pictures that we take as families, I often wonder if we are passing more to our children than a faded photo displaying their lineage. As Jacob blessed those two little boys on his knees, I, too, want to be found faithful in blessing my five grandchildren. They are filled with wonder and potential. They bring joy to my heart, and I long to bring God to theirs.

There was no comment in the devotional about the conscience choice to bless the younger over the older son. Can someone explain this? It seems to be a central point of the scripture passage.

Psalm 102:28
The children of Your servants shall dwell safely and continue, and their decendants shall be established before You.
All of my children shall dwell in the presence of the Lord. Even their descendants will be established before Him
