Children or Stones?
July 20th, 2015
Matthew 3:1-12
John the Baptist is such an odd character. It wasn’t merely his oddity that drew people to him; it was his message. Those who came with open hearts received the message and the baptism. Those who came to the desert with ill intentions could receive the message and could receive baptism, but their motivation made their redemption difficult. Any heart can be changed. However, when our hearts have a trajectory leading to self-righteousness and pride, law keeping instead of grace, and self-interest instead of humility we cannot see the need we have for the change Christ brings.
The reality is we all need a Savior. Scripture teaches us that there is no distinction between anyone. The righteous teachers of the law cling to their heritage as their salvation. John tells them that God is at work beyond that.
God is bigger than our distinctions. God loves all people. In Christ everything changes. In fact, stones can become God’s children if he wants them to.
