Fit for a King
March 30th, 2015
1 Samuel 16:1-13
Beauty has always been valued across cultures and time. We know, however, that a beautiful appearance does not equal a beautiful heart. Even if we focus on someone’s heart, there will always be things hidden from our sight. Not so with God. When He sees, He actually knows all there is to know. When looking for the one God had chosen as king, Samuel had to be informed by God which son of Jesse’s was truly “acceptable.”
Both Eliab and his younger brother David were pleasing to look at. Yet, it was the heart that needed to be most pleasing. Following David’s anointing, we are told in 1 Samuel 16:13, “from that day on the Spirit of the LORD came powerfully upon David.” Do we desire to be one who looks good but has little to offer? Or, do we desire to be one on whom the Spirit of the Lord can come in power? One question we can ask each day is, “Have I spent as much time seeking the Lord as on my outward appearance?” God desires to impart Himself to us.
