Hebrews 6:13-20

Many early Christians were buried in tunnels under the ancient city of Rome called catacombs. Those who have visited the catacombs say you can see symbols of faith on the Christians’ tombs, the most common of which are the dove, the fish, and the anchor.     The dove represents the Holy Spirit, and the fish appears because the letters that make up the Greek word for “fish” also stand for the words “Jesus Christ, God’s Son, Savior.” The early Christians used the anchor as a symbol of security because just as an anchor keeps a boat from drifting, hope holds us steady in the midst of difficult times.     Without an anchor, a boat will drift in whatever direction the current takes it; it will also be subject to the wind and the waves. Even skilled sailors lose a degree of control and security without an anchor. In the same way, our hope in Christ is the only force that will keep us afloat in the midst of life’s storms.     This is why we put our hope, confidence, and trust in Jesus, the one who told the wind and the waves to be still (Mark 4:39).
