Humility in Service
April 5th, 2014
Ephesians 4:1-16
Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you felt ill equipped for the task at hand? Welcome to the club! This anxiety can show itself in many situations: beginning a new job, the first night home with a newborn, making that big move, etc. Perhaps another area where we sense an “equipment” deficiency is in our walk as Christians.
We recognize and confess that we do not always forgive as we should, that we pass judgment where we should not, that we do not always have a healthy vulnerability, and we do not always seek counsel for wisdom. How are we to live this Christian life when the calling appears to be too high for those called? Consider how Paul begins this key verse: to live according to the calling we have, our walk begins with humility.
Paul is not referring to a self-deprecating walk. Instead he informs us that our pathway is one filled with the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23)! This fruit begins when we recognize that our calling, our life of serving others, begins with the humility.
