Proverbs 10:22-32
I recently spent a delightful evening with friends I hadn’t seen in years. We talked for hours, sharing news of our lives: our families and our ministries. I realized as we said final farewells that I felt refreshed by our time together. Our conversation had lifted me up and encouraged me in the work that God has called me to do.
The book of Ecclesiastes tells us that there is a time for silence and a time to speak (Ecclesiastes 3:7). The wise person knows the difference and speaks the right words at the right time. God will provide the discernment to know when to speak and will prompt with the right words. Words can offer wisdom, strength and healing. A message of encouragement and grace will nourish and restore.
When God rebuked Job’s comforters for speaking (Job 42:7) it was because they had not spoken the truth about God. Today’s reading from Proverbs 10 tells us that if we seek God’s wisdom and pursue righteousness, we will know the words to say that will please God and will build up those to whom we are speaking.
