1 Corinthians 1:18-25
The story is told of a dog, a yellow Labrador retriever, who rescued his owner from icy waters following a duck hunting accident. The dog grabbed the unconscious man by the coat sleeve and swam to shore where help soon arrived. One of the bystanders on the shore was heard to say: That silly dog can’t swim that man to shore. But the silly dog did it against the odds and the skeptical words of the bystander.
Challenge to Holy Living
The imagery of the word “perishing” might suggest a person floundering in deep waters without much hope of being saved. Such persons may reason that religious talk really doesn’t solve their predicament, thus it would seem to be foolishness. The flip side is that for those who desperately want to be “saved” there is divine presence and power to snatch them from perishing in the deep waters of sin, offering eternal hope through a changed life.
Actually, foolishness is to turn aside from the power-laden cross where redemption is God’s great strength and triumph over sin.
