Pass The Hope!
January 4th, 2014
Psalm 119:65-80
Francis Asbury traveled thousands of miles via horseback or carriage preaching the gospel all over what would soon be the United States of America. He rose each morning at five to saturate his spirit with Scripture. God’s promises provided the hope he needed to ride on, despite horrific migraines and continual bouts with malaria, pneumonia, and other chronic diseases. Regardless of his physical challenges, Asbury was known to consistently thank God.
One day he and a companion rode several hours through freezing rain to hold a meeting at a frontier settlement. To make matters worse, no one showed up to join them. Instead of giving up, Asbury began riding through the hills to gather a few of the faithful. His friend wondered what he could thank God for on this miserable day. Just then Asbury looked up to heaven and prayed, “Lord, we thank Thee that every day is not like this one!”
This reliance on God is not casual wishing with fingers crossed. “Put your hope in the LORD, for with the LORD is unfailing love and with him is full redemption” (Ps. 130:7).
