Luke 5:1-11

Luke 5 has always impressed me with the need to listen to Jesus’ instructions and then do as He would do. All night Simon and others had been working hard to catch fish and had caught nothing, but as soon as they obeyed Him and let down their nets as He said, two boats were filled to overflowing and in danger of sinking. What a valuable lesson to anyone who listens–obey His call. Wasn’t Peter just like all the rest of us, afraid in our sinfulness? The higher calling is found further on in the story–Jesus calls, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people” (v. 10b)

Just as fishing for fish is not an easy occupation because of many long hours of hard work, so it is true that fishing for people (souls) can require long hours of hard work. Paul Harvey once said, “Too many Christians are no longer fishers of men but keepers of the aquarium.” In this fast paced world, let’s not become keepers of the aquarium; instead let’s become fishers of men.
