What’s In A Name?
October 20th, 2013
Hebrews 1:1-14
When Lindsey and her husband were expecting their first child, and then again when they prepared to adopt their second, they talked a lot about names. It’s a common topic of conversation among expectant mothers. They quiz their friends and family, read baby name books, and tune their ears to the names of people in books and television shows; all in an attempt to find the perfect name for their child.
In Hebrews 1, the author talked about the name of Jesus. Jesus’ name is superior to all others–even superior to the names of the angels. It makes sense if you think about it. At Jesus’ name, people bow. At Jesus’ name, multitudes fall on their faces in worship. I can think of no other name that causes such a response.
The names of our children certainly don’t hold that much weight. We might choose a name simply because we like the sound of it or because it’s unique or held by a beloved family member. But Jesus’ name? His name was His identity. It was His future. His name was everything.
