God’s Divine Power
September 29th, 2013
2 Peter 1:1-11
“What do you expect? I’m only human!”–said the man who had been caught cheating on his wife.
Think of Peter’s own failures. One minute he’s making stupendous affirmations: “You are the Messiah–the Christ–the Son of the Living God!” and the next arguing with Jesus about proceeding toward His certain suffering in Jerusalem. “Get behind me Satan!” Jesus yelled at him.
“I will never deny you!” Peter affirmed. Within hours, questioned by a little servant girl, Peter did exactly that.
Yet something happened to Peter at Pentecost. Not that he became perfect–he still had some prejudices to work out–but the Holy Spirit purified and empowered him. And here he is late in life writing about God’s power to enable us live godly lives.
What does God expect? Quite a lot, it turns out. “Only” human? No, nothing less than human. No excuses. If I’m living less than a godly life it is not because His grace is too weak, it is because my faith is too small.
