Matthew 9:1-13

Following Jesus’ mission to the eastern shore of Lake Galilee He returned to “his own town,” Capernaum. News spread quickly of His return. Soon the house where He was staying was jam packed with people anxious to hear Jesus’ words (see the parallel accounts in Mark 2:3-12 and Luke 5:18-26).

Four men arrived carrying a paralyzed man on a mat. Since these men could not carry their friend through the crowd they devised an unorthodox way to get him to Jesus. They carried him up to the roof, tore away the roofing tiles, and with care lowered him to where Jesus was teaching below. What a peculiar and unexpected approach!

“When Jesus saw their faith” He assured the paralyzed man, “your sins are forgiven.” This comment was at least as unexpected as the means of the man’s arrival. A murmur went across the crowd. “Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’?” (v. 5).

The greatest miracles are always those which are hidden to human and unbelieving eyes. Heaven is pleased when the lame walk, but when one sinner repents heavenly trumpets sound and the angels dance for joy (Luke 15:7).

We can become paralyzed in life because we are get so weighted down with the sins in our heart that we can’t get motivated.

Jesus’ forgiveness of the man’s sins lifted his load whereas he could have the faith needed to get up. .

Correction: We sometimes get paralyzed in our circumstances because we are so weighted down with the sins in our heart that we can’t get motivated.
