Hearts That Love to Obey
June 10th, 2013
Deuteronomy 6:1-12
God longed to enter into a covenant relationship with the descendants of those He had freed from bondage (5:1-6). Their ancestors had promised, “We will listen and obey” (5:27). But He expected more than lip-service: “Oh, that their hearts would be inclined to fear me and keep all my commands always” (5:29).
The one true God offered to be their benefactor and protector. He was giving them the good land He had promised their ancestors (6:10). In return, He expected a response of grateful loyalty: “Do not forget the LORD, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery” (6:12).
So Moses urged Israel: “Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength” (6:5). To love God from the very center of their beings required more than words or feelings. They were to commit themselves to Him without reservation. “These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts” (6:6). And they were to teach their children that heartfelt obedience to God was the secret of a long and prosperous life (5:33; 6:7-11).

If we would only obey God today, he would heal our land.
