A Red-Letter Day
April 25th, 2013
Zechariah 12:10—13:9
Some days are more eventful than others. The days each of our sons were born were not regular days for us. They were “Red-letter Days.” A Red-letter Day is one that has special significance. The reasons can be positive, like the birthday of a child, or painful, like the day of a tornado outbreak. Red-letter Days define our lives. They are transformational for us. After a Red-letter Day, we will never be the same again.
Zechariah foresaw the ultimate Red-letter Day. It’s a great and terrible day. On that day, redemption will come to God’s people. Their idols will be removed and their sins cleansed. That day will be a day of mourning and sorrow. Sins will be laid bare and false prophets are exposed.
Good Friday was such a great and terrible day: a day of mourning and rejoicing, of remorse and redemption. As Christians, that day, along with Easter, define us. As we live each day may we trust in the One who is the Lord of all days, Red-letter and otherwise.
