Deuteronomy 7:1-11

A denominational leader was once asked what he thought was the biggest challenge faced by the church. He immediately said, “The sovereignty of the individual. Too many people think it’s about them.”

That’s a pretty heavy statement. It’s also accurate. In our individualistic culture, life has become all about “me, myself, and I.” I’m the sovereign–or lord–of myself. Unfortunately, that attitude finds its way into the church. Over time, churches become groups of people who think it’s all about them.

Deuteronomy Chapter 7 challenges that mind-set. As they come into the Promised Land, God reminds the people of Israel he chose and redeemed them not because they were a mighty, powerful nation. In fact, they were powerless and enslaved when he brought them out of Egypt. What made them a people chosen and blessed by God was their faithfulness, not their puffed-up sovereignty. They would continue to receive God’s promises if they remained faithful.

God’s people are faithful, relying on God’s grace to do something amazing in and through us.
