Praying For The Next Generation
April 14th, 2013
John 17:20-26
Have you noticed as we get older, the focus of our prayers seem to change? We begin to pray less about jobs and our declining health, and more for the lives and happiness of our grandchildren, and even great-grandchildren.
Sarah’s preteen grandson always hides a smile when she prays for God to protect his future wife from the ways of the world. He smothers a giggle as she prays for her to have a personal relationship with Christ at an early age, so she will be pure when she meets my grandson. He becomes thoughtful as she prays for him to live a Christian life, so someday she will choose him for her husband.
In his last prayers, Jesus set an example in how to pray. First, he teaches us to pray about our own intimate relationship to God; second, he reminds us to pray for other believers near us–our family, friends, and colleagues just as he prayed for his followers; and third, he teaches us to pray for the next generation of disciples.
Thus, we, too, pray for the next generation of believers that they may personally know Christ and witness to others about God’s great love.
