Light Of The World
March 11th, 2013
John 9:1-12
Nestled in the inspiring story of Jesus healing a blind man is his simple statement that he is the light of the world. The Lord’s provision of light is a biblical theme that runs from creation when God declared, “Let there be light” (Gen. 1:3) to the record of the New Jerusalem, “The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp” (Rev. 21:23). Even though the concept of God being light pervades scripture, in this instance Jesus made a reference to a time-specific period of light, “While I am in the world” (John 9:5). Jesus’ ministry was in a different phase. God was a man and he landed in a world that needed light.
When Jesus left his earthly ministry this “while” was over but that didn’t mean that the light would go out. Jesus sent his Spirit so that we could experience the same light. The world can’t get dark enough that Jesus can’t brighten it up.
