Whistle Blowers
March 6th, 2013
John 8:1-11
Catching someone in the act is a lot more fun than being caught! Some people even make their living catching others in the act. We call them referees. Those whistle blowers are just watching for someone to err so they can blast their action-stopping horn and make a big announcement about the poor athlete’s failure. While we expect the referee to expose all wrongs, it is a painful experience in real life.
This woman was a sinner. She stepped out of bounds and apparently she was a repeat offender. Now the crowds of self-enlisted referees were all blowing their whistles. Her situation was worse than embarrassing. The crowd had evolved into a lynch mob. Jesus diffused the unforgiving gang with a dose of its own medicine: “Let any one of you who is without sin . . .” This stoning was immediately terminated because Jesus blew his whistle. They were all out of bounds.
Jesus demonstrated that the heavenly Father would rather forgive sin than punish it. And that is great news for sinners, caught stepping out of bounds.

“Jesus demonstrated that the heavenly Father would rather forgive sin than punish it.”
That’s a profound observation.
