Job 28

How do you get to have wisdom? Can you conceivably earn wisdom? Is there a formula to follow to be wise? Most of us think that wisdom comes with experience, with maturity, or with age. There may be a great deal of truth in that. But Job’s commentary on wisdom doesn’t mention experience or age. According to Job, wisdom comes from fearing God.

Job isn’t talking about being afraid of God. To fear God is to respect him, honor and obey him. That being the case, anyone at any age, whether young or old, can have wisdom as they give themselves to God in total obedience.

The Christian walk is not about checking good deeds off a list. Certainly if we love and honor God, we will be about the activities of his kingdom. By honoring and respecting God, we will be wise beyond all normal human capacity. Job knows that. We should too. We should practice that.

There “might” be a difference between God-loving and God-fearing. In 1 John 4:18, perfect love drives out fear. In fear, obedience is given because of the consequences; and, in love, obedience is given because of a strong desire to please.

According to Proverbs 9:10, fear is the “beginning” of wisdom; wisdom may not end in fear.

Furthermore, in Matthew 22:38, Jesus stated that love is the greatest commandment. Love, of course, obeys, honors, and respects; but it is so much more. It is a relationship that “grows” and does for the other out of love rather that “fear.”
