Galatians 4:21-31
Several years ago, when my husband was in seminary, I found myself becoming increasingly critical and judgmental, even of other Christians. One day, God seemed to turn his spotlight on me, as if to say, “Oh yeah? What about you?” I immediately humbled myself before God, and he led me on a quest to understand the true meaning of holiness.
I realized that holiness wasn’t a checklist of do’s and don’ts by which I could justify myself and judge others. Instead, I discovered holiness was allowing God to live his personality through me. With Paul, I could say, “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me” (Gal. 2:20a). A set of rules and laws no longer determined my attitudes. I had been set free by Jesus’ command to “love one another” (John 13:34a).
The Galatians were bound by the rules of the former law, when in reality they had been set free by God’s law of love. It is only when we are walking in that freedom that we experience the fullness of God’s presence in our lives.
