Romans 8:28-39
A Vietnamese pastor’s wife tells how she would bake bread for her husband, who was in prison, and slip hand-written Bible passages into the loaf. Romans could be verses that she included. I can picture the pastor discovering the message, unrolling the tiny page, and cherishing the words copied in his loving wife’s hand. I imagine he pressed it to his heart, repeated the words, and then perhaps passed it secretly to others who needed a fresh reminder of God’s faithfulness. These words would bring hope in seemingly hopeless circumstances. “If God is for us, who can be against us?” (Rom. 8:31b).
Although most of us will never face such difficulties, we may feel at times that the world is crumbling around us. Health issues, changing finances, family problems can trap us in a prison of despair. Paul’s powerful words to the Roman church have encouraged and inspired multiple generations of believers. Just remembering these promises can help us through the roughest times.
In uncertain days, look to God.
