God’s Fallout
July 28th, 2012
2 Samuel 2:1-7
When the mighty fall, there is fallout. Governments reel, economies crumble, people become afraid, and some lose their faith. But in the midst of all the turmoil God’s people may not only prevail but they can do what is right. And so did the men of Jabesh Gilead.
These men and their families had been rescued by God at the hand of the young, new king named Saul. God had given them a resounding victory over their pagan and domineering neighbors the Ammonites. The people of Jabesh Gilead were deeply indebted to Saul. Perhaps they watched with disappointment and grief as their king crumbled before their eyes. Still, in death, they wished to honor him. Out of respect for the dead and the memory of being saved from their enemies these good men did a good thing. This was an act of God’s fallout.
When we permit the character of God to grow up within us, we can act like them when the mighty fall. We can honor the good, nurture the wounded, encourage the disillusioned, and show kindness to everyone. That is God’s fallout.
