God’s Stubborn Persistence

April 22nd, 2012

RG AUDIO 042212John 15:26—16:11

The world may hate and kill Jesus and persecute his disciples, but God is not finished. God will have his witnesses in the world. Jesus was the foremost witness, but now his disciples will carry on what Jesus started. The world may try to silence their voice, but there will be another voice that it cannot silence, the voice of the Counselor, the Advocate, the Holy Spirit.

This means, first, that the disciples will not be on their own. The Spirit will be with them to keep them steady in the hour of intense suffering. Second, the Spirit will press the claims of God on the world by exposing its sin and guilt in its treatment of Jesus and his emissaries.

In a matter of hours Jesus was going to be arrested and executed. In these final words to his disciples he was assuring them that neither his death, nor theirs, was going to be the end of the story. God’s story will go on.
