Your Kingdom Come
December 14th, 2011
RG AUDIO 121411Matthew 6:1-15
We Christians often envision God in a far off heaven—a beautiful, majestic, perfect heaven. While we trudge through the messy, unpredictable world in which we live, we sing of God’s kingdom, and we long to come one day to our true home there. It is quite comfortable to think of a perfect retirement from our uncomfortable dwelling here.
There is danger in this thinking, and in trying to avoid the messy unpredictability of this world. We miss the opportunity to see God’s kingdom come here and now. If we pray like Jesus teaches us in Matthew 6, we will pray that God’s kingdom will be present on earth in all of its beauty and power, as it is in heaven. We are invited to be part of a mission seeking justice and working toward the restoration of all things to God. We cannot, however, do this kingdom work while plotting our escape.
