John 11:28-37

Why did Jesus weep at the grave of Lazarus? Was it just human emotion responding to the death of a friend? Was he moved by the sadness of Mary and Martha? Was it their faith that touched him? Was it because he sensed their disappointment that he had not come sooner? Was it because he knew he would soon face death himself?

One thing is clear. Jesus understands our feelings. He knows what it means to be tired. He understands hunger and thirst. He confronted Satan. He dealt with frustrating people. He encountered ingratitude. He lived with family members who did not always understand what he was doing. He endured ridicule. He cried. He was lied about. He suffered terrible agony. He felt forsaken. He died. The Bible says, “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses” (Heb. 4:15a). Yes, Jesus understands!

Who are the best helpers? They are the persons who have walked where we walk. Jesus has been where we live.
