Worth the Sacrifice?
June 11th, 2011
1 John 2:15-27
A familiar Kenyan tale tells of a hungry hyena as he follows the scent of food with his nose. After walking for a long distance he reaches a junction and cannot decide which path to follow. Determined to satisfy his hunger but unable to decide which path to take he follows both roads at the same time, splitting himself in two. Is his goal worth the sacrifice?
We, too, can experience a divided heart when we try to serve God and ourselves at the same time. It’s not possible to serve two masters; we end up failing both and destroying ourselves in the process. Goals that are focused on what is temporary and self-serving are not worth the sacrifice. By keeping our hearts centered on what lasts for eternity and investing in bringing others into the kingdom we are fulfilling the will of God in our lives. Though the world will pass away, we can be assured of living forever with God if we sacrifice now what is temporary, for what lasts later.
