True Liberation
June 9th, 2011
1 John 1
Most African flags have red color, symbolizing the blood that was shed during liberation struggles. Young people are taught the importance of honoring those who lost their lives fighting against colonial oppression. The Bible talks about the importance of Christ’s shed blood to release sinners from the oppression of sin because, without the shedding of blood, there cannot be forgiveness of sins.
John declares that the blood of Jesus purifies us from all sin, as we walk in the light, not in the darkness. To purify means to make pure, and in this case we are made pure from sin. No sin is left unaddressed; the blood of Jesus is sufficient to deal with all our sins. It is when we are cleansed from sin that fellowship with one another and God is possible. Sin has a way of making us self-centered, but when the blood of Jesus cleanses us we become other-centered and can then experience genuine, loving relationships.
