Romans 6:15-20

Benson’s grandfather used to tell spellbinding stories about slave trading atrocities from an earlier time in Malawi’s history. He told of families torn apart when members were captured like animals, abused and deprived of every freedom. Their status prior to slavery did not matter at all. Without hope or joy they waited to die and to be forgotten.

With such a horrific view of human bondage, it sounds ironic to think that there could be such a thing as “better slavery.” However, in Romans chapter 6, there seems to be two types of slavery. The first is slavery to sin, which brings destruction and death. On the contrary, we can refer to the second type as “good” or “better slavery.” Voluntary slavery to righteousness, which instead of depriving a person of their rights and dignity, leads to holiness, hope, joy, and the promise of eternal life.
