James 4:1-10

Ungodly people and circumstances are a part of the life that surrounds us. We find them in the media, the marketplace, schools… Some of us have even let their behaviors become part of our own lives. It is all too easy to befriend the world. Such friendship can become damaging to Christian life and witness. Eventually, even Christians can find it difficult to distinguish between the godly and the ungodly. However, praise be to God who gives us grace to live lives of entire and safe submission to him.

Full submission to God is the best and safest way to keep ourselves from being polluted by unwarranted friendship with the world. Through total submission to God, we are able to know God’s heart and to discern between the godly and ungodly influences that surround us.
Submission requires surrender.

It is hard to balance “come ye out and be seperate,” with “go into all the world,” and “love your neighbor.” We can not do it without Christ beside us. To love and witness to the worldly without becoming contaminated we need to be in constant communication (prayer) with the Lord. Only He can keep us safe. Our testimony depends upon our being different from the world not coping their ways to get close to them. Our difference should attract them, not our similularties.
