Like A Mighty Army

Isaiah 11:10-16
Flags, ribbons, and banners draw attention as they flap in the breeze. The fluttering material grabs our interest and piques our imagination.
The Christ child’s banner is different however. His banner is the universal sign of hope for those who seek him. He is the glorious, peaceful resting place for those filled with fear and anxiety. He is the banner of expectation for the nations. He is the anticipation of those who love his appearing.
The banner of the kingdom of Christ is a cross. It constantly marches before his people. Like a mighty army following its king, the Church follows the Christ of the cross. The commander charges his army, “Deny yourself, take up your cross and follow me” (Matt. 16:24, author’s paraphrase). We are following the banner of the cross, like a mighty army.
More than a loving family, we are to be a mighty army on his mission. Marching forward, following the cross, we make Christlike disciples.
