Isaiah 9:1-7
While anticipating the birth of a baby, questions abound. Will it be a boy or a girl? What will he look like? What kind of temperament will she display? Will she be tall and thin, or will he be short and stout? Most importantly, what shall we name the baby?
Ancient cultures especially valued the birth of a son. The name was considered essential to a happy and viable future. Isaiah declares this Son will be called “Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” No wonder the Jews waited with such eager anticipation for the Messiah. They had Isaiah’s promise: God would send a Savior to fulfill the promise and accomplish their expectations.
The Christ child came to be exactly what we need. We need a Wonderful Counselor. We need an Eternal Father and a Mighty God of Peace. Jesus, the Son has been born to us. He is all we need.
