Thinking God’s Thoughts

Nehemiah 8:1-12
Have you ever had to sit through a long sermon? What if you had sat with this crowd and listened to the reading of the Law of Moses from sunup to noon? I think everyone would at least need a coffee-break around 10:00 A.M. But it was all so fresh and new no one seemed to be bored.
I got a great gift from my wife a couple of Christmases ago: the NIV Bible on CD. I can listen for a good long time without being bored. In fact, sometimes the longer I listen, the better it gets as my mind and heart begin to flow with the Scriptures.
When we listen attentively to the Word, we are thinking God’s thoughts. The teaching of the Law of Moses in Ezra and Nehemiah’s day brought “great joy” as the people finally began to understand the Word of the Lord. How much more should the reading of the Word bring inexpressible joy to us who have God’s full and final revelation in the Gospel of Jesus Christ!

I do prefer to read the Bible on paper, but there certainly are advantages to audio Bibles. I especially like to listen to it in my car while on long drives.
