All Your Anxiety
November 1st, 2010
Joel 1:1-12
Despair. Desolation. Insecurity. The prophet Joel looks on his world and sees nothing good. The economy is in shambles. Crops have been destroyed by locusts. A mighty army has ruined the vines and fig trees. He sees nothing to offer to God in worship. Even his joy is withered.
Have you ever been there? In a failed economy, you may have been laid off. No income, no benefits. Or you may have received a fearful diagnosis for yourself or a loved one. Perhaps one so dear to you has died. You ask, what can I offer to God in my situation? My joy is withered. It’s no use to worship.
Most of us have been there when in anguish we cry out to God, “Be not far from me, O God; come quickly” (Ps. 71:12). If you are discouraged today, dare to pray that prayer.
