Thank God For His Presence
August 10th, 2010
Hebrew poetry rhymes concepts rather than words. A concept is stated and then, using different words, it’s repeated. If I don’t understand the first line, the second line says the same thing in a different way.
Psalm 37:23 says, “The LORD makes firm the steps of those who delight in him.” My first understanding is that if my life isn’t working very well, it must be that I’ve somehow messed up and the Lord isn’t “delighted” with me. Then, I read the built-in commentary of the other half of the rhyme. I find that the Lord makes my steps firm, not by making it impossible for me to stumble, but by being with me in my stumbles. Like a dad lovingly reaching out to steady his toddler’s first steps, the Lord reaches out to keep me on my feet.
He’s directly involved, helping me stay on my feet and teaching me what it means to live in a relationship with Him.
