The Wounds of God
July 4th, 2010
I sometimes struggle to reconcile the revelation of God’s essential nature as being love with the images of God found in the Old Testament. For instance, when at the end of his life Moses delivered God’s message to Israel, God, through him, said, “I myself am He! . . . I put to death and I bring to life, I have wounded and I will heal, and no one can deliver out of my hand”.
A God who puts to death? A God who wounds?
Jesus said, “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful” Like a doctor who cuts to save, God prunes our world and our lives in order to heal.
May you wrestle with this mystery today and, in it, find the healing only God can bring.
