Naaman was the proud commander of the armies of Aram – A great man, a valiant soldier, and highly regarded by the king. He was also a leper.

It is hard for us to picture the shame his condition caused. A servant girl, a slave taken from Israel, told him of a prophet in her homeland who could heal him.

When Jesus was speaking to the crowd at the Nazareth synagogue, he said there were many in Israel with leprosy during the time of Elisha the prophet, but only was cleansed–Naaman the Syrian. They became furious to think that God would work miracles for a Syrian general before them.

Naaman got the point however, “Now I know that there is no god in all the world except in Israel”. Jesus would not let the Nazarenes say, “We are the people God blesses, not those other people.” God will be glorified wherever people like Naaman humbly obey His Word.
