Learn To Discern

May 29th, 2023

Ecclesiastes 7:1-7

Remember those old cartoons which featured a character trying to muddle through a moral decision with the help of a cartoon devil on one shoulder and a cartoon angel on the other? One voice paints a beautiful, yet selective picture of a choice that excludes negative consequences. Meanwhile, the other voice presents a realistic vision of the option that may or may not be the most enjoyable, but has the better outcome.

Discernment is a skill no one outgrows. As long as we draw breath, there will be opportunities to choose between right and wrong. For Christ followers, the Holy Spirit is our constant expert in matters of discernment. The closer we stay to the Father, the clearer the gray line between right and wrong becomes.

Practicing discernment is a lifelong task. Age and/or experience do not exempt us from the need to constantly discern what is godly. Yield your desire to make decisions in your own strength by drawing closer to God each and every day. That fine line between this world and the eternal will remain highly visible.
