For Our Descendants

May 24th, 2023

Acts 2:31-41

Inheritances can be fickle things. Sometimes it’s a simple, handwritten will that says, “The kid gets it all.” Sometimes it’s more complex. Sometimes family members become divisive, fight, and even litigate over the riches of a parent. Most of the time those fights are ugly, and don’t end well.

Throughout the Scriptures, God’s people are promised an inheritance. The two major covenant promises in the Old Testament are land and descendants. If they will worship and serve God wholeheartedly, their future and their children’s future will be filled with promise.

Today’s passage contains a New Testament fulfillment of that promise. With the resurrection of Jesus and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, God’s promises are offered to everyone: “for you and your children and for all who are far off” (Acts 2:39). No arguing, bickering, or court battles are necessary. No us versus them or insiders-outsiders rhetoric is called for. We need not fight over who gets this inheritance: it’s for all of us!

How would we live differently if we really understood this promise?
