Psalm 139:17-24

Peter may have prayed Psalm 139 when reflecting on his failure and the gracious way in which Jesus called him back. Surely, he would have struggled with similar feelings toward those blood thirsty men who killed his Savior, “I have nothing but hatred for them; I count them my enemies” (v. 22). Peter had recognized his offense and had grieved over it. His desire was to follow in the way everlasting.

Self-awareness is a valuable characteristic of mature adults, but even when we have some sense of self-awareness, we can be confounded by what we discover in our hearts or thoughts. Not so with God. God knows our deepest hurts, our hidden agendas, our physical infirmities, and God knows how those things impact how we think and act.

The evil one delights in anxious thoughts and generously supplies them to us. God can help us identify where and with whom those thoughts originate and how to respond to them. Search me, know me, test me O God.
