Sensitive Hearts

2 Samuel 11:18-27

When informed of the death of Uriah, a faithful soldier who David ordered killed to cover up his own sin, David comforts his general by saying, “Don’t let this upset you; the sword devours one as well as another.” David has spent all of this chapter lying to others to conceal his sin. Now it becomes clear as he excuses himself of Uriah’s death, and marries Bathsheba, David has been lying to himself as well.

This is a dangerous place for God’s people to be. It is so hard for us to face reality when our actions have been in disobedience to God and have harmed others that we sometimes construct stories to make our actions seem acceptable. However, this pattern of deception eventually desensitizes us, so that we no longer see our sin as sin at all.

We should pray for God to keep our hearts sensitive. When we do so, we will be able to feel the call to repentance. Especially when that call is uncomfortable, we will be able to hear and respond by God’s grace.
