Perfect Love

February 2nd, 2023

Matthew 5:38-48

Jesus said, “You have heard it said, you shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.” This wisdom might seem a natural thing to do when considering those troublemakers we can’t stand. But Jesus disallowed that way of thinking and living. “Love your enemy” is His prescription.

Love means more than just having good feelings or positive vibes. Agape love doesn’t tabulate what pay-back we will get from our actions. It is outward concern—benevolence—the centering of one’s whole self on the other.

Following God’s way of love is at the heart of what it means to be a child of God…an obedient child. We see this kind of love in Jesus. Loving in His way is perfection. Perfect doesn’t mean a flawless performance, rather to be complete, full, not lacking anything. Love like this fulfills all the commandments but is beyond our capabilities. We need the sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit to cleanse and empower us to love like this.
