Remain in God

November 27th, 2022

1 John 2:15-25

The antichrist is anyone who does not believe that Jesus is the Son of God who physically lived, died, and rose again. 1 John was written to a church had come through a church split over this issue. Those who had left were teaching that Jesus was not the Christ. The letter was written to encourage those who remained to not be swayed by the teachings of the world, but instead to anchor their belief in God and His teachings.

When we in the church hear words like “antichrist,” we are tempted to look out at the world and look for the antichrist there, but 1 John shows us this problem came from the church community. John Wesley believed that Christians should pray a prayer of examination every morning, allowing God to show us the parts of our lives that need to be turned to Him. 1 John challenges us to allow God to examine our hearts to see if there are any “antichrist” tendencies within us in order that we might remain agents of Christ to the world.
