Warned to Endure

1 Corinthians 10:1-13

Some consumer products come with warning labels that are hilarious, even though they probably were not intended to be funny. Some people apparently need to be reminded that coffee is a beverage normally served hot. Irons and steamers meant to take the wrinkles out of clothing through heat contain warnings to not be wearing the clothes while you iron or steam them. A hairdryer may have the warning label: “Do not use while sleeping.” It seems obvious, but apparently someone tried it once and now there must be a warning label.

1 Corinthians 10 is a warning to us about sin. Paul reminds the Corinthians of the sins of their ancestors as a warning. It’s a negative example: “Don’t be like them!” It’s a warning that also comes with a promise. Facing temptation is common to the human condition. If we are in this life, we will face temptation. Jesus did and so will we. Yet, whenever we are tempted, God also provides a path for us so that we can endure in faithfulness rather succumbing to sin.
