Hebrews 10:11-18

“What must I do to inherit eternal life?” Several times in the gospels Jesus is asked nearly the same question.* Each time Jesus points the questioner to the commandments. Each time the person affirms their adherence to the Law. And, each time Jesus’ response is similar, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me” (Matthew 19:21). The person departs sadly, having great wealth. Finally, each time the disciples ask, “Who then can be saved?” Jesus replies, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” (Matthew 19:25-26). Jesus’ point is clear: a person’s efforts alone cannot justify them before a holy God.

All our attempts at moral perfection lead us back to one place: we still need Jesus. Through Christ alone we become perfect. It is not, “What must I do,” rather it is, ”by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.”

*Matthew 19:16; Mark 10:17; Luke 10:25, 18:18.
