John 1:1-9

Jesus was born into a world that was dark with sin. The first chapter of Romans paints the picture of all the ungodliness of the day. Jesus was “the light” we read about in the beginning of John’s gospel.

John the Baptist was the forerunner. He came to pave the way for Jesus who was coming to make a difference in the lives of people. The task of Christ was not to save only those who were important in the eyes of man. Lowly, despised, looked-down-upon shepherds were the first to get an invitation to the birthday party, telling us that Jesus came for everyone.

We were traveling one night years ago at Christmastime, driving through some tiny towns. Our son, Tommy, was a little guy, strapped in his car seat behind us. Looking out the window, he saw some Christmas lights down a dark street as we drove by on the highway above. “Look!” he exclaimed. “Christmas in the dark!”

What an accurate view of what the coming of Christ is all about. He came in the dark for every man, woman, boy, and girl. That means He came for you and your neighbor.
