Mark 13:28-37

Fig trees are aggressive and prolific, they are among the first to set new growth in the spring. They are early harbingers of a fruitful new year. It is no wonder that the Jews chose figs as symbols to decorate their Temple and the garments of their high priest.

Jesus invites us to take a lesson from the fig tree. Even though no one, except the heavenly Father, knows the day or hour of Christ’s return (v. 32). We can still be alert to the signs, the buds of hope, which point to His coming.

As Jesus’ servants, each of us has an “assigned task” to fulfill (v. 34). Nevertheless, we are to keep watch for our Master’s return. We know one thing for sure, He will return! Until then we watch and faithfully fulfill the task we have been given.

Have you ever noticed that waiting is much harder if you have nothing to do? The best way to wait is to have something to occupy your time. Isn’t it wonderful that while we wait for Christ’s coming He has given us all a task? May He find us working when He appears!
