Proverbs 3:1-10

The Bible has a lot to say about the heart. In Western culture we associate the heart with the center of our being, our will, and where decisions are made. As Christians we understand the heart as God’s residence and understand it is to be protected and nurtured. When I was growing up in the church and Sunday school, we learned about giving our hearts to Jesus. It seems so simple. If so, why do we as adults have such a difficult time giving God our hearts (being, will, decisions)?

We live in a culture that “leans” on self-made success, independence, and productivity. To lean on something is to depend on that thing or person for stability and strength. The flesh calls us to lean on our own capabilities, but scripture calls us to lean on God. This is only possible through the wisdom we find in Proverbs 3:3, “Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart.” God’s wisdom will guide us along the path that is stable and sure.
