Psalm 84:1-12

Most people, even those who are not particularly religious, intuitively associate prayer with thanksgiving. “Thank you, God, for giving me food, shelter, a job, a car, a family, and all the other good things in my life.” We also pray to ask God for assistance. “Lord, help me overcome this problem,” or, “Lord, change this situation.”

It is less common for us to pray simply to express our longing and adoration for God. But isn’t that what we do when we love someone? We tell them what they mean to us. We spend time together, sometimes talking for hours. We give gifts to those we love, write letters, serve them, and show affection.

Listen to how the psalmist expresses his love for the Lord: “How lovely is your dwelling place, Lord Almighty! Blessed are those whose strength is in you! You are a sun and a shield! You bestow favor and honor! Blessed is the one who trusts in you!” (vv. 1, 5, 11). When we express our love for God loudly and often, our love for God deepens.
