John 6:14-24

Rachel, Geoffrey, and Rebecca took a road trip from Burkina Faso to Ghana. Rachel said, “Wait till you taste Ghana bread!” Burkina baguettes lost their texture within hours, but the big, warm loaves of Ghana bread stayed fresh for days.

Perhaps the people who had been among those to eat Jesus’ miraculous bread felt as we had about Ghana bread—they wanted more—they wanted it always. In fact, they wanted it so much that they sailed for Capernaum to search for Jesus, who, when He saw them, scolded them for their desires, saying, “You are looking for me. . . because you ate the loaves and had your fill” (John 6:26).

They had forgotten the important part of the miracle—Jesus had given thanks and the bread was multiplied. They just wanted the bread however they could get it. To them Jesus was the conduit for food, not the giver of all good things from above.

We, too, must look beyond the bread to the giver of it, the Bread of Life.
